How to Open an ICS File – See a Calendar Invite Without Outlook

An .ics file is a calendar event — usually a meeting invite, a booking confirmation or a webinar reminder sent as an email attachment. If double-clicking it does nothing (common on Windows without Outlook, on Chromebooks and on some Android phones), open it here to read it.

What you'll see

  • When, in your own time zone. Invites from Outlook, Google, Zoom and Teams store the organizer's time zone; the viewer converts it to the zone your device is set to and says which one.
  • Where: the location, plus the Zoom, Teams or Google Meet link when there is one.
  • Who: the organizer and how many people are invited.
  • Repeats: "Every week on Monday, Wednesday, until 2026-12-18" instead of the raw rule.
  • Cancellations are marked as cancelled.
  • A whole calendar (an exported .ics with hundreds of events) shows as a table you can download as Excel.

Add it to your calendar

  • Google Calendar: click Add to Google Calendar — it opens Google Calendar with the event filled in for you to save. (The event details go to Google only when you click.) For a file with many events, use Google Calendar › Settings › Import & export › Import.
  • Outlook (Windows or Mac): double-click the .ics file, then Save & Close.
  • Apple Calendar (Mac, iPhone): open the file and choose the calendar to add it to.

Common questions

The time looks wrong. Check your device's time zone — the page shows times in it. If the invite gives no time zone at all, the page says so and shows the time as written.

Is my file uploaded? No. It is read on your device. Invites often contain private meeting links; they stay with you.
